As environmental concerns continue growing across Illinois, several lawmakers have introduced legislation aiming to address issues ranging from microplastic pollution, data center expansion, and environmental education. Here are some pieces of legislation that deserve public attention and support!
The POWER Act
The POWER Act requires data centers to pay for their own energy, as well as requiring the energy to come from renewable sources. Environment assessments are enforced to monitor how the data center would impact the community. While the bill failed to move forward during the spring legislative session, negotiations are continuing through the summer, and may be considered during the fall.
Protect the Great Lakes Act
This bill proposes mandatory monthly testing for microplastics and PFAS in drinking water and Lake Michigan. PFAS are linked to cancer, inflammation, and reproductive issues. This bill is pending in the Senate Assignments Committee.
Illinois Data Center Energy and Water Reporting Act
Senate Bill 2181 requires that data centers report their total annual energy consumption and water usage. This helps legislators and the public better understand the negative effects data centers have on our environment. The bill is currently pending in the senate.
PFAS and Microplastics Wastewater Citizen Protection Act
This act establishes a citizen protection committee to address contamination in wastewater and monitors data and development. It ensures that economic impact is minimized when implementing these PFAS regulations.
Climate Change Education Requirements (Public Act 103-0837)
Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Illinois public schools will be required to provide instruction on climate change and its impacts on individuals and communities. The law also encourages the development of educational resources that help students understand environmental challenges and potential solutions.
Environmental education empowers future generations to make informed decisions and contribute to sustainable communities. Public awareness is one of the most effective tools for addressing environmental and public health challenges that arise.
